Op het Festival Square verscheen op een ochtend rond 11 uur plotseling een groepje van een paar honderd mensen die begonnen te dansen als Laurel & Hardy in Way Out West. Begin deze week werd in Southend-on-Sea een herinneringsplaquette onthuld in het Park Inn Palace Hotel, waar Laurel & Hardy tijdens hun Britse toernee in 1952 hebben gelogeerd. Hier een foto van de onthulling door acteur Jeffrey Holland, bekend van o.a. de tv-serie ‘Hi Di Hi’ (koppeling naar YouTube). Hij was de gast van de plaatselijke afdeling Saps At Sea van de Sons of the Desert.
Een nieuwe plaque? Niet echt, acht jaar geleden is het blauwe schild ook al eens onthuld, maar dan op de pier van deze badplaats aan de monding van de Theems. Het hotel dat de uiteindelijke bestemming was, moest toen nog worden opgeknapt. De schilden worden toegekend door de Britse stichting ’Comic Heritage‘.
